Bystolic (nebicip)

Bystolic Drug Description

Bystolic (nebicip) is an oral drug used in hypertension. It contains the active ingredient Nebivolol Hydrochloride. The medicine is widely prescribed due to its effectiveness. Likewise a generic version of the medicine is also available. This has made the drug far more affordable to many countries that cannot afford the original cost of the medication. Micro Labs Ltd trades the drug with the name ‘Nebilong’ while ‘Bystolic’ is the trade name of the company Menarani.

Conditions Treated by Bystolic

Bystolic is given to patients with elevated blood pressure (hypertensive). The active ingredient in the drug, namely Nebivolol belongs to a category of medicine called beta-blocker. In simple terms, a beta-blocker reduces the blood pressure and helps lower the pressure on the heart, it’s improving its overall functioning. To understand the functioning of beta-blockers, these literally block β1 receptors, which help patients who have heart disease. They reduce the likelihood of any adverse events associated with cardiovascular disease, which could be a stroke or a heart attack.

Bystolic Dosage Information

a.) Typical Dosage Recommendations

Bystolic is meant for oral consumption and accordingly it is available in tablet form. The medicine should be taken with water. Generally the prescribed dosage for Bystolic is once a day. The basic dosage is a pill comprising of 5mg of the medicine. This can be a monotherapy or even part of a combination therapy, depending on the severity of the patient’s condition. For severe hypertension cases, the dosage is gradually boosted up to 40 mg over a period of about 2 weeks.

Bystolic can be taken at anytime of the day as it does not necessarily have to be taken with food, which is an advantage if the drug. However since the drug is prescribed for people suffering from hypertension, it is recommended that patients taking it must ensure that they have a healthy diet that is low in salt and cholesterol.

b.) Missing a Dose

There are numerous ways to ensure that a drug schedule is not missed. One can set medicine alarms or combine the medicine with certain daily activities. A simple way is to take the medicine at the same time each day, which helps the patient to remember. However there can be some occasions all the same, when a patient misses his/her medicines. A missed dose should be taken whenever remembered as long as it is less than 12 hours. Generally for a daily consumption medicine such as Bystolic, taking a pill after 12 hours of the usual time, means that it is too close to the next dosage. At such times, the patient can simply take the next dose of Bystolic as planned. Never compensate for a missed dose with an additional dose as this can cause overdosing.

c.) Overdosing

To avoid overdosing, the patient must strictly adhere to the dosage schedules of Bystolic as mentioned by the physician. The following are symptoms indicative of an overdose of Bystolic:

  • Faintness or giddiness
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Hypotension
  • Breathlessness
  • Reduced heart rate
  • Blockage in the heart (severe overdose)

For a suspected overdose, it advised that the patient be taken to a doctor immediately. Usually if the over dosage is recent, the doctor might flush out the medicine. Additionally IV glucose and medicines to control the heartbeats might be given. –
